Drink of the Month: Old Fashioned (My Favorite)

This is my favorite way to start dinner. I don’t often find a bartender who is willing or able to make what seems to be a simple drink. They usually forget the soda water.

Ingredients:

3 maraschino cherries

Orange slice

1 Tbsp. sugar

2 oz. bourbon

4 oz. soda water

Preparation:

1. Add 2 cherries and an orange slice to a glass.

2. Add 1 Tbsp. of sugar, and muddle the sugar and fruit together.

3. Pour in 2 oz. of bourbon and add ice.

4. Top it off with 4 oz. of soda water.

5. Garnish with a cherry.

This Month's Recipe: Veggie Reuben

Along with pierogies, kielbasa and hulipki, the Reuben sandwich was a mainstay of my youth. Now that there are a number of delicious meat alternatives on the market, I have once again been enjoying this blast from the past. I highly recommend Tofurky brand Peppered Deli Slices. It really does make a big difference.

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons butter

• 8 slices rye bread

• Tofurky Peppered Deli Slices

• 8 slices Swiss cheese

• 1 cup sauerkraut, drained

• 1/2 cup Thousand Island dressing

Directions

1. Preheat a large skillet or griddle on medium heat.

2. Lightly butter one side of bread slices. Spread non-buttered sides with Thousand Island dressing. On 4 bread slices, layer 1 slice Swiss cheese, 2 slices Tofurky, 1/4 cup sauerkraut and second slice of Swiss cheese. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered sides out.

3. Grill sandwiches until both sides are golden brown, about 15 minutes per side. Serve hot.

Wash it down with a Sudwerk Helles.
